Krista Neher, CEO of Boot Camp Digital Coauthors Social Media Textbook

I am really excited to share that the textbook that I coauthored on Social Media Marketing is now in print and available for order.  As many of you probably know, this project has been in process for a long time now (well over a year) and I am excited to announce that the book is now complete, printed and available to order (I got the sample copies in the mail last week).

The book, titled Social Media Marketing: A Strategic Approach will help students and educators strategically build and execute social media marketing plans.

Why a Social Media Textbook?

Colleges are now starting to offer social media marketing as a part of their curriculum, and the job market for social media is growing quickly.  This textbook was created to support educators in brining social media curriculum to their students.

I personally am very excited about this project because I believe that college graduates need skills for a modern workplace, and increasingly, social media and digital skills are required.

Why am I Excited About This?

I am not just excited because I co-authored this book, but I am also excited because I believe that social media education is important in helping the social media industry to grow and succeed.  While the specific applications of some of the social media tools do change over time, the strategies for succes in the medium are much more consistent over time.

What is the Social Media Textbook About?

Rather than explain it myself, here is the overview from Cengage:

Social Media Marketing: A Strategic Approach promises to be the seminal textbook in the field with its distinctive conceptual foundation and practical approach to developing successful social media marketing plans. A proven eight-step social media planning model provides students with a cumulative learning experience, showing them how to construct social media strategies that achieve desired marketing goals. These marketing goals shape the development of tailored social media strategies. Special attention is given to the most effective techniques for identifying targeted marketing on the social web, with emphasis on the creation of personas that represent the critical online market segments for a company. Students discover how to put these well-defined personas to work in selecting the optimal social media platforms for reaching an organization’s marketing goals. Students are taught rules of engagement and social media ethics for behaving properly as marketers on the social web. With these guidelines in mind, the most productive marketing tactics for each type of major social media platform are examined in depth. These platform-specific tactics, along with all the proceeding material in the book, are brought together in the final chapter to create a comprehensive social media marketing plan, with detailed explanations and illustrations from a real world plan. Extensive consideration is given to monitoring, evaluating, and tuning the implementation of social media marketing initiatives. In addition, students are introduced to the most useful quantitative and qualitative social media measurements, along with various ways to estimate an organization’s return on investment in social media marketing activities.

Where can you find the book?

Who Was Involved?

  • The book was published by Cengage Learning
  • The coauthors include Melissa Barker, Donald Barker and Nick Bormann
  • Countless case studies, interviews and social media expert input as well as the patients and understand of coworkers, families and friends ;-)

Why Google + is Important for Small Businesess

Google + is one of the fastest growing social media networks in history.  According to CNN Tech Google + has reached more than 90 million users so far.  After launching Google + brand pages last year the interest in this social media tool is only continuing to grow.  However, there are still a lot of small business owners who are not sure if Google + is a good time investment at this point and if it’s going to impact their search engine ranking.

If you are one who is still wondering what it is and why you should care about it, check out this interview with social media expert Krista Neher where she talks about a small business presence on Google +.

Still have some questions?  Be sure to read Krista’s other interview on NYTimes.com where she shares insights on why it’s important to consider Google + in your social media marketing strategy and how small businesses can benefit from using it.

Is your business using Google +?  What do you think?

MobileX Cincy Recap

This week I had the pleasure of attending the MobileX conference in Cincinnati, OH.  It was a sold-out event and I am very happy I had a chance to be there!

For those who are not familiar with the MobileX conference – it is a one day conference that features the hottest apps and tools on the market as well as new solutions and strategies in mobile marketing.   This event brings together entrepreneurs, developers, industry professionals, and mobile enthusiasts that share interesting ideas, educate themselves in this fast growing field and create a friendly networking atmosphere.  The conference travels from city to city, to stay up to date on their next location check out http://mobilexconference.com/.

It’s definitely a must go event for those who are interested in new technology and mobile space.  In this post I’d like to share with you some highlights and resources from this very informative and intensive day.

There was a huge amount of tweets shared during the conference!  What was really cool is that during the conference you could see all realtime tweets on the big screen which made it very engaging.  You can find all of the tweets from the conference by searching for #MobileXCincy on Twitter or checking out this cool post with a lot of tweets by Andrew (@Andrew_ShipPR).

The conference was kicked off with keynote speaker Daniel Odio who is CEO and co-founder of Socialize - software that allow developers to add “social” components to their apps.  His presentation was called “Capitalizing on the Mobile Tsunami: Trends and how to Leverage them for Success”.  He discussed key trends and opportunities in the extremely fast growing mobile application space.  Daniel shared a few top efficiency tools that are worth checking out such as CloudApp, Rapportive, Highrise and Mailchimp.  Later on he gave us more details about Socialize in his presentation on the “Role of Social Networking within Mobile”.  Here you can view his slides and a video of his second presentation as well as his own recap of MobileX Cincinnati.

Krista Neher, CEO of Boot Camp Digital, spoke about integrating mobile into your marketing strategy during one of the breaking sessions.   As always her presentation was very engaging and full of interesting facts and stats.  The key message was that more people have mobile phones than the Internet and the fast growing market of smartphones is changing the way people access the Internet.

Here are some popular tweets during Krista’s presentation:

Josh Bob, founder of Turnstar.com (formerly textaurant.com), kept audience engaged and definitely entertained with his great sense of humor.  He sees the healthcare industry, multi-player games and even voting as being some of the top utilizers of SMS in the near future.

While there is a lot of hype around the mobile industry there is still one question remaining: What’s holding back mobile marketing?  The conference was wrapped up by the panel with this topical question. Everybody seemed to agree that while there are some issues and lack of trust from consumers, mobile is still the next big thing in marketing.  Mobile devices are rapidly changing the way we communicate with each other and receive information.  The main goal for brands is to put enough thought into their mobile strategy in order to drive engagement and connect with their customers.  The future success in mobile marketing is not only about selling and promoting your products but reaching people with useful solutions and providing valuable apps.
