I’m not on Facebook; Perspectives from a College Student

I'm in College and not on FBMillennials aren’t using Facebook anymore. Other social networks are grabbing our attention and we’ve lost our need to stay connected using Facebook. Many of my friends have even referred to Facebook as “Mombook” or “Fakebook” to express their frustrations with the platform. But why has the site that once ruled our social world lost our interest?

Here are five reasons why Millennials are choosing not to go on Facebook, and how businesses can use Facebook effectively…

 

1. Our Tribe has been Invaded

Knowing that our family or potential employers can view our Facebook page have made us become more cautious and less involved.

2. We are the Targets, and We are Overwhelmed

The amount of ads and promoted posts on Facebook are overwhelming because they take over our news feed and track our “likes”.

3. It takes too Much Time

Posting Facebook content takes too much time. We must screen posts for appropriateness and individually post content to each friend.

4. We Sense the Inauthentic Voices

Businesses often post content using an inauthentic voice, which makes the conversations on Facebook seem awkward and forced.

5. Twitter & Instagram are Connecting us

We no longer feel the need to be connected on Facebook because there are other options where our interests and friends are.

 

How your business can use Facebook effectively

1. Branch out to other social media networks

    • Use other social networks such as Twitter or Instagram to drive users to visit your Facebook Page. I will often visit a Facebook Page when I am prompted on Twitter and want to get more information.

2. Make your Facebook Page a landing page

    • Fill your businesses Facebook Page with information or news that users can go to find out more information. For example, I recently went to a local restaurant’s Facebook page when they tweeted that they have new October specials and provided me with a link to visit their Facebook.

3. Be authentic

    • Use a natural voice when writing for social media. Using simple language and truthful facts will build trust with users.
