January is usually the time of year where we take a moment to evaluate the year we left behind and plan for the year ahead.  I know that is what I’ve been doing these last few weeks….

As you build your plans I wanted to share with you some tips on how you can create remarkable marketing in 2011.

Go beyond the ordinary and be extraordinary.  Take the jump into new marketing and really bring your business to the next level.

Here are 7 things to consider when building your marketing plans for this year:

1) Consider a Groupon or Living Social Deal

Groupon and Living Social definitely hit mainstream last year, but if you aren’t familiar with them, you should get familiar with them, and think about incorporating them into your marketing for next year.  Both Groupon and Living Social offer HUGE deals (50% + off) that are available for one day only.  If your business has a product or service consider running a groupon.  In addition to the new customers you’ll get I would assume that Groupon now has tens or hundreds of thousands of emails on their lists.  The exposure is HUGE.

2) DO SOMETHING with your Facebook page

By now, most businesses have Facebook pages.  The problem is that the pages don’t do anything.  They are filled with random posts.  Make a decision to TRY to get Facebook working for you.  Build a plan and stick to it for a month.  Try posting different content and see what people respond to.  Put some effort in, learn everything you can about it execute with excellence.  Give it a shot.  Run a contest. Check out the apps.  Try something extraordinary.

3) Start an email newsletter

Again, if you don’t have one yet, what are you waiting for?  Email newsletters are easier to create than ever before – you can start on Constant Contact for about $25 a month.

An email newsletter is a great way to keep your fans/friends/prospects up to date on your business, share news, offer deals or just show them how smart you are.  Many sophisticated email marketers can tell you exactly how much someone on their email list is worth by crafting strategic email marketing campaigns.

4) Actively Grow Your List

Make the decision to grow your email list this year.  Starting email marketing is only the first part….  growing your subscribers is KEY to long-term success.  Build a well thought out plan to encourage people to sign up for your email list.  Offer them something of value.  Give them an incentive.

If you have a physical presence use your in-person interactions with clients/customers/guests to encourage them to join your email list (or your Facebook page or follow you on Twitter).  Grow your connections.

It is easier to get an existing customer to buy from you again than it is to get a new customer.  Leverage this insight.

5) Make Something About Your Product Remarkable

Seriously.  This is the most important thing that you can do.  Make something about your business worth talking about.  What is it related to your business that is worth me telling someone about it.  Usually it is just a small detail.  The unexpected thing that really delights us.

Consider this when you look at your business.

Maybe it is something remarkable in your packaging.  Perhaps you go out of your way to do something nice for them.  Maybe they get a free gift that they don’t expect.

Think about your entire business and consider how you can really make it worth talking about.  Why should somebody love you?

6) Share Your Knowledge

This sounds simple and obvious, but seriously, isn’t it about time that you started creating content (videos, blog posts, webinars, something) to show the world how smart you are?

Every business (hopefully) is really good at something and has some unique knowledge.  Share this.  See what you can gain by showcasing your expertise.  Whether it is creating a blog, some videos or webinars, commit to trying to come up with creative ways to showcase the talent.

You will be surprised at the may ways that this strategy can pay off.

7) Find a new Audience for your Product

This is one idea that can totally change your business and result in dramatic step-changes in your sales.  Who are additional groups that you can target your business toward?  How can you expand your market?  What additional groups can you focus on that are currently untapped?

Most businesses have significant untapped markets – the key is taking the time to figure out who they are and understand their needs and problems.
