Millions of people sign up for online courses every day. With the best intentions. To learn something new. Grow career options. Acquire an in-demand skill. Improve skill in something. Enjoy a new hobby. Start a side-hustle. Become an entrepreneur.

Did you know that according to some studies under 5% of people complete the courses that they sign up for?

Online course completion rates are under 5%.

How do you beat the odds? How do you complete the course that you’ve signed up for?

Here are 7 things that are proven successful to complete your online course.

  1. Give Yourself a Deadline

Deadlines drive action. With everything (not just online learning). Set a realistic deadline for yourself. One of the challenges with completing an online course is that you can do it any time. Or not do it any time.

Set a deadline to drive your accountability. This will give you something specific to work towards.

  2. Break it Into Small Steps

Especially with online courses, break your goal into small steps. It can seem overwhelming to try to complete a 40-hour course.  BUT completing 1 hour a day seems more doable.

For our online certifications we provide a Quick Start guide with a daily and weekly plan. Students who use the plan are significantly more likely to complete their training.

  3. Put it in Your Calendar

You’ve heard the expression “failing to plan is planning to fail”. We are ALL busy. It can be challenging to prioritize online learning.

Once you’ve broken your training into small steps, put the time on your calendar to complete the course. Treat it as any other obligation. This will give you a detailed plan to complete your training in time.

  4. Write Down Your WHY

You decided to join an online training, so obviously, you have some motivation to complete the course. That being said, it can be difficult to stay motivated. Especially as life and other priorities get in the way.

Write down, on paper, WHY you signed up for the course. What do you hope to get from it? How will your life be different if you complete it? What do you want to get out of it? Why is it important to you?

This will keep you grounded when you lose motivation.

  5. Share Your Goal Publicly

Accountability is key in completing anything. Share your goal (with the date) on social media, through email, or verbally to your colleagues, friends, and family.

When you share a goal publicly in writing you increase your accountability to complete it. You’ll feel accountable and not want to miss your goal.

Studies show that both writing and sharing your goal improve your probability of achieving it.

  6. Join with a Friend

The students that consistently complete our certifications join with a friend or as a small group. Joining with a friend, co-worker or as a team increases your probability of completion.

This is because your are sharing the experience and increasing your accountability. You also can share ideas, ask questions and stay focused with your accountability partner or group.

  7. Give Yourself a Reward

REWARD YOURSELF when you finish. Planning a reward gives you something to look forward to. Think of a reward that you can focus on to stay motivated.

Also, once you complete your course, share your success! Post online, share with friends and let your coworkers know.

What else has motivated you to complete an online course?
