To be successful with any marketing plan you must start with strategy. Without a strategy, it’s like taking a vacation with no destination in mind. If you have no idea where you’re going, you’re likely never going to get there.

It’s easy to default to a tactical mindset and jump to pulling tools out of your digital tool box. But don’t fall victim to shiny object syndrome when building a digital marketing plan. If you are just trying chatbots or creating a hashtag or building a Facebook Group without a strategic reason, then those tools are not going to get the results you want – especially if you aren’t even clear on what results you want in the first place!

How to use this cheat sheet:

  1. Determine your objective. What are you trying to accomplish with your marketing plan? It could be sales of a specific product, it could be to increase donations or even to win an election. The first row “goal” will guide your process.
  2. Determine which strategy (or strategies) are most likely to impact the results you want. If you are driving sales of a new product, you may determine that focusing on an “attract” strategy to make your audience aware of the new product and benefits.
  3. Use the cheat sheet to identify the tactics that will work best for achieving your goal.
  4. Use the cheat sheet to determine the metrics you will use to measure success.
