So What Does this Mean for Marketers?

The time is NOW to learn, sharpen or improve your digital skillset. Marketing isn’t like accounting where there is a defined body of knowledge that you can check off your list and move on.

Digital is always evolving.

This means you need to constantly “sharpen your saw” and upskill if you want to stay relevant.

Whether you are new to understanding digital or want to brush-up it is a journey. I teach digital marketing and I get new ideas and inspiration every time I TEACH a class.

How Can you Improve your Skills In Digital Marketing?

Here are 5 things that you can do right now to improve your skills in digital marketing.

  1. Get Certified in Digital Marketing
Certification is a great way to show that you have a strong grasp of the full range of digital marketing topics. It also gives you breadth in your understanding of digital. From strategy to execution to measurement you’ll be prepared to improve your digital executions.
  2. Join Going Training to Stay on Top of What’s New
Find ongoing training opportunities so you are continuing to learn and discover what is new. Too many marketers fail to stay up-to-date and end up left behind. Find a digital community of like-minded marketers who are sharing ideas.
  3. Join Industry Conferences to Connect with Thought Leaders
There are so many great conferences depending on what you want to learn about.  I attend industry conferences every year and it is one of the key ways that I grow my network and continue to learn. Look for conferences that match your business size and focus area.
  4. Add Digital Marketing News Sites to Your Social Media Feeds
Find and follow digital marketing thought-leaders, news sites and industry groups or publications on social media. This will put industry news and inspiration directly in your newsfeed. It is a great passive way to stay up-to-date and inspired.
  5. Read Focused Digital Marketing Books
Build a book list for yourself with leading digital marketing books. Depending on your learning goals you may choose broader books to understand the landscape and opportunities or you may want to focus on something specific. The advantage of reading books vs. blog posts or articles is that they are usually well organized and go deeper into a specific topic.
  6. Choose a Focus Area and Dive Deeper
As we see when looking at in-demand skills, certain areas like search engine optimization and social media tend to top the list. You may want to focus on influencer marketing or email optimization depending on your organization’s focus. Regardless of your goals, choosing one thing to really focus on at a time will allow you to dive deep into that specific topic.
